What are Export Controls, why they are used, and why you need us.

What are UK Export Controls?

Export control regulations (laws) are put in place by the UK Government to create a requirement for a license to export or broker ‘controlled’ goods that are either military or dual use [controlled goods].

Exporters must ensure they are authorised by the Department of Business & Trade for controlled goods to be shipped legally. If a UK control is in place, the license will be considered before export / shipment.

Without going through these measures, the shipment may be considered unlawful.

Why are they used?

To help prevent the goods falling into the wrong hands – to counter illicit proliferation, sanctions breaches, internal repression etc.

Why do you need a professional such as us?

UK Export Controls can be difficult to navigate; understanding whether your goods are military or dual use [they cannot be both], using the correct classifications, declarations, end use control, evidencing due diligence and other paperwork as well as understanding the full processes and needs before a license is obtained as well as the restrictions of the license, can be difficult to understand.

A professional will not only guide you through this process but will ensure you do not end up unintentionally committing a crime.

It is important to have someone by your side that fully understands this process to ensure few mistakes are made and can help prevent fines, imprisonment, and seizure of goods, or if this has already happened, what to do next.
